KAREN WOODWARD

Karen is a mixed media artist living and working in Austin, TX. She received her BA in Art History from the University of Texas and her MFA in Sculpture from Washington University in St. Louis.  Prior to moving to Austin, Karen was faculty at Craft Alliance Center for Art and Design in St. Louis, MO, where she was chair of the Glass Department. Her current work combines sculpture, collage, painting, and light to create colorful portraiture that explores mental states and states of being. Karen has always been more interested in what a portrait is thinking or feeling than how it appears through the viewer’s gaze. With the Mind’s Eye series, the subject appears to gaze back at the viewer, looking, thinking, and processing the world around them. People can be very complicated with continually changing moods. Color changing lights in combination with inner elements serve to express the concept of a psychological portrait.
